Adventure Week |
|
Discover fun, challenge and thrills at Adventure Week! Participants will have a day to explore the Wisconsin River by canoe or kayak in the Dells while paddling past miles of secluded sandy shores and dramatic sandstone cliffs. Another day will take students down the Military Ridge State Bike Trail from Mt. Horeb to Blue Mound State Park where they will cool off with a swim in the park pool. The next adventure will take students vertical to Devil’s Lake State Park for some of the Midwest’s best rock climbing led by professional guides who will provide all equipment and instruction. Next, it’s back to the Wisconsin River for a lazy day of tubing. This journey will take students to the Spring Green area where they will tube and stop for lunch on one of the sandy beaches or sandbars. The week ends with a day of colossal thrills, hair-raising roller coasters, and slippery slides at the 156-acre Mt. Olympus Water and Theme Park in the Dells. Participants in this course must be a swim level 3 as indicated on the swim permission form. |

Few people know that Wisconsin had a walled town with earthen pyramids and temples around a central town square 500 years before Christopher Columbus was born. Students can expect to learn about this and other interesting facts as well as possibly visiting an active archaeological excavation (schedule and weather permitting). Through computer simulations and hands on activities, the course will open a window on our state’s past while expanding critical thinking and analysis tools. Visits to museums and prehistoric sites will complement instruction. |

All great artists find inspiration in the world around them. In this course students will tour the city of Madison and create artwork that was inspired by visited locations. Planned sites will include Olbrich Botanical Gardens, prominent architectural buildings, community gardens and other unique locations around town. Students will be provided a sketchbook and materials to take with them to plan, design and implement their artistic creativity into a final inspired work of art. |

Biking Around Madison |

Did you know that you live in one of the best “biking” cities in the country? This biking beginner/chill rider course is designed to give students a chance to leisurely discover the many bike paths that run through Madison. Each day will be spent exploring bike paths and some of the cool destinations they take us to. Cruise around the capitol building, enjoy some ice cream while taking a break at the Union, ride from park to park, and then take a laid-back ride around the lake and stop for a swim. (Participants in this course must be a swim level 2 as indicated on the swim permission form.) These are just a few of the activities planned for the week. This course will even show students where the secret “bike elevator” is. All students will need a multi-gear bike in good working condition, a bike lock and a bike helmet. |

This candy course will include molded candies and sculpted candies, such as lollipops. It will also include cooked candies, such as fudge and homemade caramels. The course will also include different methods of presentation of the created candies. At least one example of another type of food gift will be created to share with family or friends. Learn new skills and knowledge for rewarding and safe paddling. This introductory course is for those who have never taken paddling lessons or for those who want to develop greater paddling skills. Participants will spend two days learning to canoe, two days learning to kayak and then take a local trip on Friday. See Madison like a tourist. Each day, students will visit a different Madison attraction. Destinations may include Olbrich Garden (where you’ll see the Blooming Butterflies exhibit), the Wisconsin State Capitol (where you’ll have a great view of Madison from the observation deck), and the Governor’s Mansion. Take a behind-the-scenes tour of Camp Randall Stadium. See a mastodon skeleton and glow-in-the-dark rocks at the University of Wisconsin Geology Museum. Take a walk down State Street. to the Wisconsin Union, where you’ll enjoy Babcock ice cream on the terrace. Other museums and attractions may be added depending on weather, tour availability and students’ interests. |

Fitness can be fun! Participants will learn how to correctly warm up the body and increase flexibility using appropriate stretching and other exercises. Then, participants will get to sample various activities which can be fun and support fitness at the same time. Participants will try such activities as yoga, Dance-Dance-Revolution, running, ball games, and building core strength. The choices are endless! Learn the basics of mosaics and transform glass scraps into beautiful art objects! Students will have the opportunity to make several mosaic projects, such as a mirror, flowerpot, garden stone, picture frame, or votive candleholders. Students will have plenty of glass in every color of the rainbow vailable, and our instructors will teach students how to use a mosaic nipper to cut and shape the pieces of glass for their projects. Once their pieces are cut, students will learn about different types of adhesives and grout. This is a fun opportunity to work in our studio, and students will leave with a few art pieces that they will be proud to display or give as gifts. |

American Red Cross GuardStart: Lifeguarding Tomorrow is a program designed for youth ages 11-14 that provides a foundation of aquatic and leadership knowledge, attitudes and skills for future successful completion of the Red Cross Lifeguarding courses. Prerequisites include swimming the front crawl for 25 yards continuously while breathing to the front or side, treading water for 1 minute using arms and legs, and submerging and swimming a distance of 10 feet underwater. The course covers the four objectives of prevention, fitness, response, leadership and professionalism. Participants in this course must be a swim level 3 as indicated on the swim permission form. Practice how to safely walk a horse, wash a horse, groom a horse and clean tack. Learn the parts of a horse, basic veterinary care, feeding information, hoof care and farrier work. Learn the fundamentals of riding a horse, including trotting, circling and posting. Participants will get a chance to take a trail ride during the week. Experience the physical side of riding--balance, hand control, body position, foot position, stamina, strength-- and the mental side-which involves grace, poise, intellect and “feel”-that are necessary for exacting the maximum possible performance from a horse. Kayak Camp |

If you love being on the water, join us for a week of kayak camp with Rutabaga Outdoor Programs! Students will spend the entire week kayaking; working on paddling skills, deep water rescue skills, games to help improve their paddling skills, navigating with chart and compass, and float plans. Days one and two will cover the basics of kayaking, and days three, four and five will be spent exploring the waterways near Rutabaga while learning more advanced skills. Participants must be a swim level 3 as indicated on the swim permission form. |

Mountain Biking |
|
Mountain biking is an exciting and challenging sport that will prove to be more extreme than a bike ride on a normal bike path. This course will take students to several different off-road trails in the Madison area, weather permitting. Students will learn off-road riding skills and basic bike maintenance and repair. All students will need a multi-gear mountain bike (no hybrid or 27-inch wheels) in good working condition, a bike lock, a bike helmet, and stamina for sustained biking. Students may take a break from biking to cool off at the Blue Mound State Park swimming pool; therefore, participants in this course must be a swim level 2 as indicated on the swim permission form. |

Students will learn to use a sewing machine to make a 36” x 44” Amish-inspired quilt and take home a completed quilt to give as a gift or keep for themselves. The week includes a shopping trip to a fabric store where you’ll choose your own materials. Students also welcome to bring material from home. |

Check out one of the hottest sports for kids…ROCK CLIMBING! This course will cover all the basic skills that are needed to climb safely indoors. Students will progress through the week learning knots, belay skills, climbing technique, and proper stretching for healthy, injury-free exercise. Of course, there will be plenty of challenging climbing as well. Upon completion of the course, students will become certified Boulders belayers. |

Let’s make Softie toys! Make an elephant, a cat, a mouse, a bunny, an owl— you name it! Softie toys can also be a soccer ball, a friendly monster, a cupcake or a car. Students will learn how to make small soft toys sewn completely by hand - no sewing machine required! Participants will choose from a variety of patterns or create their own soft toy designs. Students will learn and practice the skills used for making stuffed toys including fabric choice, basic sewing, special stitching and stuffing techniques. Students get to create each toy’s character and unique personality. Adorable Softies make a unique gift and making them is a great way to express imagination and creativity. Sketch Comedy |

From vaudeville to Saturday Night Live, sketch comedy consists of a series of short comedy scenes or vignettes, called “sketches,” commonly between one and ten minutes long. Learn and practice acting skills such as voice, stage presence and improvisation through this fun and unique performing art form. Sketches can be videotaped and watched so students can receive immediate feedback and continue to improve their performance. Students will have the opportunity to perform one or more sketches at the end of the week. Observers are welcome. |

Students will learn how to maximize the flavor and tenderness of foods by cooking them slow and low, meaning low temperatures for longer periods of time. Students will make a high-quality, one of a kind, stained glass panel. Each student will choose a pattern and glass colors, and our instructors will guide them through the whole process of making a stained glass panel. The steps include pattern work, glass cutting, grinding, foiling, soldering and applying patina. Although it is a lot of work to complete their first panel, students love this class from day one, when they learn to cut glass! |

The “Study Skills” portion teaches essential student skills such as organization, time management, note-taking and test preparation. Those skills are then anchored with Kinetic Education, which uses a protocol developed by Richard Bellamy to improve academic performance in Reading, Writing, Math, and Test-Taking. The “Building Positive Assets” portion of the class uses both discussion and hands-on activities to nurture the student’s self esteem and develop more positive relationships with themselves and others. |

Even if they have never touched a needle and thread before in their life, this class will teach students how to transform old t-shirts into something that is hip, fun and fits them and only them. The students will also learn tie-dye and batik techniques to help make their creations more unique. |

Students will learn how a television station operates, focusing on fast-production and real-time video mixing. The projects will model real-life live television news production, with all the component pieces we’re familiar with: news desk anchors, remote reporters conducting public in-the-street-interviews, the meteorologist predicting the weather, and so on. Students will actually perform real-time productions using station mixers, cameras, microphones, recording decks, and character generating software (for titling). They will also tape outdoor sequences for “remote” segments that may include footage of nature and/or pedestrian interviews, but mostly “made-up”news reports. Each student will get a DVD recording of their live show. |
