Adventure
Week (Ropes, Rocks, Survival & A Cave) Fee:

Rock rat or newbie, both will enjoy a week of self challenge at
their own pace and learning new skills. Join Middle School
U staff and area businesses for a week with a new adventure
every day. Spend one day working on team and individual
challenges on a multi-element ropes course. On the second
day, share in a geo-cache adventure using GPS units to help
us navigate our way to various hidden treasures. Day three,
take the adventure down under by caving in an active cave.
Explore nooks and crannies in a series of connected rooms
70 feet below the surface. On day 4, take your skills to the
rocks—rock climbing at Devil’s Lake –one of the Midwest’s
premiere climbing destinations! Wilderness survival will be
our adventure for day five. No special skills are necessary to
participate--all needed skills and safety protocols will be
taught. All technical gear will be provided. Students from
both the Madison and Stoughton Middle School U sites will
be included in this course.

African Dance Fee: $90
Come and learn the African dance, Tokoe, from a man who
learned it as a young man in his native Ghana and has shared
it with people all over the world. Tokoe is a recreational
dance performed by the Ewe’s from the Volta Region of the
Southern part of Ghana, West Africa. The dance is performed
by the youth to tell people in the community that they are
leaving childhood and coming into adulthood. Young people
in Ghana, as well as in many other cultures, are happy when
there are more things they can do as young adults. Come
and learn one of the dances they use to celebrate.

Spend a week learning African drumming with an
experienced teacher of the art. Students will learn Fume-
Fume, a recreational musical form from Ghana, West Africa.
Fume-fume is performed on celebratory occasions and to
cheer people up and lift their spirits.

Afro-Latin Music & Dance Fee: $85
In Africa and Latin America, drumming and dancing are a
major part of daily life. Participants will learn how to sing
several songs, do many different dance moves, and how to
clap and drum some of the basic rhythms from communities
in West Africa, Brazil, and the Caribbean. We will watch some
exciting videos and learn about different instruments like
the talking drum, the gangokui bells, the djembe, and more.
Come and explore these fascinating cultures and their music,
and find out how they are similar to rock ‘n’ roll and the blues.

Few people know that Wisconsin had a walled town with
pyramids and temples around a central square even before
Christopher Columbus was born. Students can expect
to learn about this and other interesting facts as well as
have the possibility to join in a Wisconsin State Historical
Society archaeological excavation (schedule and weather
permitting). Visits to museums and prehistoric sites will
compliment instruction.

This course prepares youth for the many responsibilities
associated with caring for infants and young children.
Participants will learn to make good decisions regarding
the health and safety of young children as well as basic care
skills. The course will also include emergency first aid skills.

a written exam will be Red Cross certified.

high level of activity.

in this course. Tools and equipment will be provided and you

Learn the thinking person’s pool game! From basic shot
techniques to advanced strategies, you will learn to enjoy
a game that challenges your brain as well as your hand-eye

in this course for the week of July 14.

time to play longer more complex versions of games.

This candy course will include molded candies and sculpted
candies, such as lollipops. It will also include cooked candies,

the created candies. At least one example of another type
of food gift will be created to share with family or friends. A
field trip to a candy shop or specialty supply store is planned.

Never paddled? No problem! This introductory course is
for those who have never taken paddling lessons. Spend
your week learning to canoe and kayak on Lake Mendota.
Participants will spend two days learning to canoe, two days
learning to kayak and then take a local trip on Friday. The
course is intended to introduce basic paddling safety and
skills as well as encourage students to paddle and enrich
teamwork skills. Students from both the Madison and

This is the advanced course for those who have taken Canoe

water. Participants will work on developing self-sufficiency
and teamwork as well as advanced paddling skills. This course
will introduce more advanced paddling and tripping skills
as well as inspire students to paddle, encourage leadership
potential and enhance teamwork skills. Students from both

Take advantage of Madison’s Elver Park course and learn the
active, fast paced game of disc golf. Students will play the
course, check out specialized discs and learn the tricks of the
disc. Course time will also be spent on learning Ultimate Disc.
In Ultimate the idea is to pass the disc to teammates until the
goal line is crossed. Invite your friends to enroll in this course
as well - the more people, the better the game.

magnets and observe the connection between electricity
and magnetism. Add a touch of magnetism to your electric
creation.

As well as being a modern Olympic sport and a time honored
symbol of nobility and refinement, the sport of fencing represents one of the most exciting and challenging of

Rocks, ROCK! Get ready to explore all the natural treasure
the earth has to offer. Investigate the basic components of
our earth—rocks, minerals and gems. Search for clues and
discover a life story hidden inside a rock! Would you like to
become a spelunker for a day? Immerse yourself in the Cave
and learn how caves and speleothems form. As part of the
journey, learn the basics of using an orienteering compass
to set and find a bearing. Practice your new skills; plot your
course and take a journey on the orienteering course. In
addition to visiting Cave of the Mounds, we will spend time at
geology exhibits, and hunting for rocks and fossils.

Glass Mosaics

This course is designed to provide each student with the
basics of working with mosaics. Designs and individual
projects will be discussed the first day. Do bring any design
ideas you might have this first day. Choices of projects will
be indoor mosaic on plywood, glass to glass mosaic, garden
mosaic on a terra cotta pot or outdoor stepping stones. You
will learn how to use a mosaic nipper and glass cutter to
shape the pieces of glass. After the glass is all cut, you will
learn about the proper adhesives and the final step which is
grouting.

“What makes a food healthy?” If you ever asked yourself that
question, then this is a course for you. The fundamentals
of food science will be covered, as well as an overview of

on how to eat a healthy, balanced diet and how much is a“serving”. At least two items will be prepared each day, so
come willing to taste test a variety of foods. A field trip to a
grocery store or specialty store is planned.

Wisconsin’s state parks. Hike to a “hidden” cave in Governor

OK kids, it’s finally time for your first concert tour! Well,
maybe it’s only to MSU and back, but that’s a start! This
program is open to participants who currently play a
musical instrument. We will create a band out of whatever
instruments we have to work with, and compose songs for

being a musician: how to practice, the history of some of the
world’s most successful musical groups, and what it’s like to
perform. Let’s get that guitar out of the basement and on the

This course combines the kayaking portions of Canoe and
Kayak I and II. We will spend the entire week kayaking;
working on paddling and rescue skills, navigating with chart

Why do onions make you cry? How does yeast make bread
rise? What makes popcorn pop, whipped cream frothy and

answers to these questions and conduct a lot of other
experiments with everyday materials found around the
kitchen. Bring your scientific curiosity to “cook up” something
interesting.

Is it too hot to be active but too boring to sit still? Then
try these games! This survey course is made for the “lazy,
hazy, crazy days” of summer. Students can get some activity
without over-doing. Try yo-yos, hacky sacks, jump rope,
Chinese jump rope, jacks, marbles, juggling balls and fox tails.
If a break from these games is needed, participants can try
spool knitting, quilling, wax strings, pipe cleaners, “beadlings”,
Cat’s Cradle and string games.

Learn the basics of hand sewing and how to operate a
sewing machine. Participants will learn how to select and
use a pattern. Initial projects will be items for your room and

Your Own Bear

Students in this bear making course will make 12, 15 or
18-inch traditional teddy bears made of man-made fur.
The bears will be hand-sewn, jointed and have child-safety

Are you interested in law or being a lawyer? Do you want to
understand how the court system works? Through role-playing, participants will get a better understanding of the
third articles of the U.S. Constitution—the Judicial Branch.
Throughout the week students will participate in several
different mock trials, including Federal and Supreme Court
cases. Roles will include serving as juror, an attorney, either
for the prosecution or for the defense, or as a judge. A field
trip to the Capitol and the Wisconsin State Supreme Court is
planned.

Participants will learn the equipment and techniques
necessary to create a mosaic piece from a range of materials.

with their friends and families.

This recreational course will offer a variety of sports in which
the use of a net is included. Participants will play volleyball,
tennis, badminton and table tennis. The instructor will
offer insight into the strategy of the game and beginning
skill instruction. The course emphasis is on variety and
sportsmanship.

One Act Play Fee: $90
This will be a fun play with parts for everyone! Actors will
spend the week learning parts, staging and rehearsing the
play, as well as creating the set and personal costumes. The
final performance will be shared with other Middle School U
students and families at the end of the week.

Orienteering
and Geocaching

This course will start with learning the basics of using an orienteering compass and a topographic map, which includes
terrain features and elevation lines. Students will use pace-and-learn methods for estimating distance covered. Several
outings to navigate orienteering courses will be taken. The
second portion of the course will include Geocaching, a type
of treasure hunt using a GPS unit to navigate to a specific
location in order to find a hidden object. Participants will
learn to operate a hand-held GPS (hiking model) and then
practice the use by finding geocaches in the Dane County
area. Students will be doing some rough terrain walking, so
bring appropriate footwear and a daypack with water

In this painting course, students will explore different
painting techniques including watercolor, acrylic and oil stick
to create original works. The styles and techniques used in
the course will be based on observations of works by well known
painters. The course will include at least one field trip
to a local gallery or museum.

Paper Arts Fee:

From the delicate Japanese art of origami to constructing
durable paper maché projects, this course will examine
the endless possibilities of paper. Functional pieces and
oversized decorative works will be created. This course will
include at least one field trip to a local gallery or museum.

Pasta Galore Fee:

Participants in this course will learn about and have an
opportunity to make different types of pasta as well as
different pasta sauces. They will also have an opportunity
to make their own pasta using a pasta machine, and, of
course, taste-test their work. A field trip to a specialty store is
planned.

Photojournalism Fee: $90
Students will learn basic photography skills and how to use
their photos to express a point of view or tell a story. This
course will allow participants to combine their photos and
writing skills to produce a finished product to share with
friends and family. Students are requested to bring their own
digital camera, if at all possible.

Pottery
Fee: $170
This is a two-week course offered with an intervening week
to allow projects to dry. Students need to be available for
both weeks. During the first week of this two-week course,
students will create several containers and small clay pieces
using a variety of hand-built and wheel-thrown techniques.
Following a week break that is necessary for the clay to
dry, students will return to paint and glaze their creations.
